Frequently Asked Questions

Will I still be able to make and receive phone calls? →

Yes! Honda Handsfreelink™ still functions after installing PURE, but as with any aftermarket amplifier installation in a Honda/Acura, you must disconnect the factory ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) Module from the factory wiring harness or your inbound callers may hear an echo when you speak. The ANC module location is vehicle dependent. If you’re not sure where yours is located, contact us for guidance.

Will I still have chimes and nav/voice? →

Yes! You or your installer will need to set up analog “signal ducking”. Currently, Helix and Arc Audio DSPs are known to support this feature effectively. Other DSPs may also be compatible but have not yet been tested by S2i Audio.

What is DSP "signal ducking"? →

Signal Ducking is the DSP’s ability to give analog input signals priority over digital inputs, so that when a navigation prompt occurs, or a phone call is received, the digital source input is attenuated or muted automatically while the analog signal is broadcasting. DSP Signal Ducking capability is a requirement for total factory integration.

What DSP/amps are compatible? →

To be compatible with the PURE Digital Integrator, a DSP needs to have a specific type of remote control port for volume control, it must have signal ducking programmability, and finally it needs to be able to mix digital and analog signals simultaneously.

Currently, we have validated Arc Audio and Audiotec-Fischer (Brax, Helix, Match) to have all three capabilities. As more DSP brands are validated they will be added to the Compatibility page. You can also sign up on our email list for future announcements.

I have a feature or compatibility request - can I tell you about it? →

Absolutely, we love that! One of the core values of S2i Audio is to go where the customer demand is, and develop products that solve real-world problems in elegant and uncompromising ways. The more we hear from our fan base, the more we can focus R&D in the right areas. Please email us, DM us on Slack or the enthusiast forums where we post. Whatever works best for you.

Where does the PURE install? Where do I install my DSP? →

The most convenient location to install PURE is in place of the factory stereo amplifier, as the amplifier will be removed from the circuit entirely anyway. This way you don’t need to extend any factory wiring - you just plug PURE in where the OE amplifier used to.

Your DSP installation location is entirely up to you - under the front seats, in the trunk, etc. Choose a location that has access to harness routing, ample airflow, and is generally a safe location for electronics that get warm and produce a lot of power. The only wiring you will need to “add” is here - we provide a two food pigtail harness for PURE, because we don’t know where you’ll decide to mount your DSP, and we don’t want to charge you extra for wiring length you may not need.

How do I connect everything? →

The “How It Connects” section of our website highlights this nicely, so that’s worth taking a look at, but detailed instructions are provided with PURE as well.
The short of it is, PURE replaces the OE amplifier, which places it electrically between the factory head unit, your DSP and the car’s speakers. All the connections at the PURE are plug-in connectors, and the only wiring you will need to add is between the PURE wiring harness and your DSP.

What do I still need to buy / what is included? →

Included with every PURE Digital Integrator is a two-foot pigtail wiring harness, with each wire individually labeled for easy hook-up to your DSP.
Not included, but required, are the DSP remote control adapter harness which is DSP brand and model-specific and you can only get these from us as they are a custom-assembly. Finally, you will also need a Toslink optical digital audio cable which can be bought off-the-shelf and we also sell these in 6 and 10-ft lengths; make sure to buy the right length for your DSP installation location.

Why aren’t more cars covered? →

PURE is a very new invention, and the focus on the first generation has been on late-model Hondas due to it being what the owner drives! That said, more applications are being developed as you read this, which you can keep apprised of on the Compatibility section of this site, and our mailing list.

What makes PURE different from other integrators on the market? →

PURE does not use a proprietary licensed interface like other digital integrators do, which makes it less expensive overall and also makes development for new vehicles quicker and easier, so long as the technology is supported.

And PURE goes a few steps further than most integrators by internalizing the entire vehicle audio system harness into a “hub” that makes PURE a drop-in device with less required supporting devices to function. Power, analog signal, volume control, speaker wiring, and even electrical to optical digital audio signal conversion all happen within PURE.

PURE not only integrates factory volume control into your DSP, but it optionally enables you to control your subwoofer level via the factory head unit’s bass EQ, if you like (but if you prefer to use a bass knob you still can).

PURE is also designed to have expandable future capabilities that can be “unlocked” with firmware as these new features are developed - for example, we are working on implementing DSP preset switching from the factory head unit.

What’s the difference between PURE and a T-harness? What would I want one over the other? →

PURE is a Digital System Integrator that replaces the factory amplifier with a superior DSP, bypassing all the lossy and sonically-debilitating factory tuning.. A T-harness allows you to capture the analog outputs of the factory amplifier (which is not removed) in order to use a DSP to “de-tune” the factory tuning into a flat input signal.

But this is lossy as it requires conversion back to digital then back to analog, rather than staying in the PURE digital realm from source to amplification. PURE is sonically superior to a T-harness but trickier to implement, which is why most installers choose the T-harness route. We engineered PURE to internalize as much of the “complexity” as possible, to make it even easier to install than a traditional T-harness, so there’s little reason to go the lower-fidelity route if there is a compatible PURE for your car.

Does Automatic Noise Cancellation (ANC) still work? What about fake engine sounds? →

On all Honda vehicles, ANC needs to be disabled if there is an aftermarket sound system in the car, or you will experience echoes, resonances, and other sonic artifacts that you don’t want. The process is as simple as unplugging the harness that goes into the ANC unit for your car. Fake engine sounds are also produced by the ANC unit so they get disabled too.

Why are some factory speaker terminals missing from the PURE harness? →

Subwoofer: The factory subwoofer wire gauge is too thin for an aftermarket subwoofer system, and since an aftermarket subwoofer is almost certainly going to be installed in the trunk, with the DSP mounted nearby, routing the subwoofer wiring back up to the front of the vehicle (where most factory amplifiers are located) only to run back to the trunk again merely adds electrical resistance. It’s both easier and higher-performance to run your own larger subwoofer wiring.

Rear Hatch and Roof Speakers: Certain OE speaker locations like the rear hatch of a Civic, roof speakers on an Odyssey or Integra, etc. are very small odd-shaped drivers that are not replaceable with aftermarket speakers due to their size and shape. Also, locations like roof speakers are not typically used in a proper aftermarket setup due to the detrimental effects they can have on stereo imaging.

Can I run a knob for subwoofer level control while PURE runs the system volume control? →

Yes! This is a bit more involved as the DSP harness needs to be prepared for this configuration, and it also depends on whether your subwoofer amp is the same as the main DSP, or a separate monoblock. Reach out to us before you make your purchase and we will set you up with the right products, at no additional labor cost.

Are there any factory controls that are NOT retained? →

Yes. The factory Fader, Balance, Treble and Midrange EQs, surround/3D effect, loudness contour, and vehicle speed volume adjustment are not passed through. While they can be theoretically included, there would be a meaningful impact to cost, so we did not want to charge everyone extra for features that only a small handful of users might want. Instead, we focused on subwoofer level control via bass EQ as the only other integration control feature besides system volume.

That said, it is possible to repurpose the subwoofer level control for one of the other effects, if your DSP supports it. It will require custom reprogramming of your PURE, and a cost would be associated with that, but if you really want a different function reach out via email to discuss your need and we will see if it's possible.
